Lost and Found
As a mom, only you know the sheer panic you feel when you lose sight of your child in a public place, even if it’s just for a few seconds. It can happen anytime,
anywhere and to the best of parents. In fact, one survey suggests 90% of families are affected at least once by a child getting lost.
These simple tips may help keep your child from getting lost and help both of you know what to do if he does.
-
When shopping, pick a place to meet in case you and your child are separated. Make it safe and easy for him to remember, such as the customer service department.
-
Attach your name and cell phone number to the back of his clothing so an adult can find it easily.
-
Dress your child in a bright color such as lime green or vivid yellow so he’s easier to spot in a crowd or from a distance. Always make a mental note of
what he’s wearing in case you need to describe it to authorities.
-
Teach your child it’s not okay to play hide and seek or run from you in a public place.
-
Keep a recent color photo of your toddler with you at all times. It’s a good idea to jot his height, weight, birthmarks, eye and hair color, special
needs and other characteristics on the back, along with your cell phone number.
-
Teach your child to look for another mommy and ask her for help if he gets lost or scared.
-
Never leave your child alone in the car, a public restroom or the grocery cart. Even if you think you’ll only be gone a few seconds, take him with you.
-
Make sure your child knows your full name in case store personnel or other authorities need to page you.
