First, the good news: the number of Americans who smoke cigarettes has been declining for the past 25 years, with about one in five now saying they smoke¹. The bad news? Exposure to secondhand smoke can pose serious health risks to children, especially those under age two. If you or someone in your household smokes, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends you quit. Babies who breathe secondhand smoke have higher risks of ear infections, upper respiratory infections, tooth decay and sudden baby death syndrome (SIDS)².

Although crying is perfectly normal for a baby, it can be distressing for you and her. Colic, or extreme crying for no apparent reason, typically occurs between three weeks and three months of age, lasts more than three hours a day, at least three days a week and at least three consecutive weeks. Doctors don't know what causes it, but it usually goes away by itself by the time she reaches three months. In the meantime, try calming her with soft talking or singing or a gentle ride or walk.
