Backpacks for Beginners

Even if your toddler is too young for school, a backpack is a convenient, grown-up way for him to carry small toys, books, snacks, bottled water and other essentials to play dates or on short trips. Not all backpacks are alike, however, so knowing what to look for will help you choose one that's functional, safe and comfortable.

Share and Share Alike

It’s normal for toddlers to resist sharing, but you can help your little one see the benefits. Teach her games or puzzles where everyone works together toward a common goal. Encourage taking turns so she learns sharing isn’t the same as giving things away. Before play dates, put away toys she’d rather not share and bring out those they can play with together. Set an example by offering to share your snack or magazine. Use positive reinforcement rather than punishment to avoid feelings of resentment. Eventually, she’ll learn sharing is more fun than keeping things to herself.

Television Screen

The American Academy of Pediatrics says an hour or two of television per day is plenty for children, and kids under two shouldn't watch at all. To make sure the time your toddler spends in front of the TV is good for him: 1) look for programs with educational content and positive characters and values, 2) instead of letting your child "watch TV," allow him to watch specific programs and turn the set off when they're over and 3) stay away from violent shows, which can trigger aggressive behavior.
